Located in the heart of the Plaza de las Naciones Unidas in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood, the Floralis Genérica is one of Buenos Aires' most unique and modern monuments. Donated to the city by Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano in 2002, this colossal silver flower has quickly become an iconic symbol of the city.
A Kinetic Masterpiece
Made entirely of stainless steel and aluminum, the sculpture stands 23 meters (75 feet) tall and weighs an astonishing 18 tons. What makes the Floralis Genérica extraordinary is its kinetic mechanism: the six massive petals are designed to automatically open every morning with the sunrise and close at sunset.
Surrounding Parks
The sculpture sits in a reflecting pool, creating beautiful visual symmetries. The surrounding park is a popular spot for locals to bring a blanket, drink mate (traditional Argentine herbal tea), and relax on sunny afternoons.
